1842 Born 12 May, near St. Etienne, France, the youngest in a family of 21 children
1848 Begins piano lessons with his mother
1851 The family moves to Paris in the aftermath of the French Revolution
1853 At age 11, enters the Paris Conservatory, and studies under the opera composer Ambroise Thomas
1863 Wins the Prix de Rome for composition, and while in Rome meets Franz Liszt, from whom he receives help and encouragement
1867 His first opera La Grand'tante is staged in Paris
1870 Serves in the National Guard during the Franco-Prussian war
1884 Paris premiere of his opera Manon heralds his years of greatest fame and success
1912 Dies in Paris, 13 August, at age 70
