1797 Born 29 November, into a poor family in Bergamo, northern Italy
1806 Enrols in a local choir school founded by the composer Simon Mayr
1814 Continues his studies in Bologna with the eminent teacher, Padre Mattei
1817 Reluctantly joins the army and writes operas in his free time
1818 A female admirer pays for him to be discharged from the army
1828 Marries Virginia Vasselli, daughter of a Roman lawyer
1830 His opera Anna Bolena brings international fame
1837 Appointed Director of the Naples Music School
1838 Moves to Paris after the death of his wife during a cholera epidemic. His opera Poliuto is banned
1845 Shows increasing signs of mental illness and paralysis
1848 Dies 8 April, in Bergamo
