1732 Attends Prague University
1735 Travels to Vienna and then to Italy as a musician, under the patronage of Prince Lobkowitz
1741 First opera, Artaserse, successfully staged in Milan
1750 Marries Maria Anna Bergin, daughter of a wealthy Viennese merchant. The marriage secured his favourable position in the Viennese imperial court
1754 The Austrian Empress Maria Theresa appoints him Kapellmeister to the court theatre in Vienna
1767 Composes opera Alceste, with its historic preface spelling out his ideas about operatic reform
1773 Moves to Paris, with commissions to write a series of operas
1787 Dies in Vienna, 15 November at age 73
