1749 Struggles to make his way as a humble musician
1753 Becomes accompanist to Italian composer and teacher Nicola Porpora
1758 Appointed Kapellmeister (Director of Music) at court of Count Ferdinand von Morzin
1760 Marries Maria Anna Keller
1761 Appointed court musician to Prince Paul Esterházy, and then to his brother, Prince Nikolaus
1766 Becomes Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court
1790 Prince Nikolaus Esterházy dies. Haydn is retained, but is, in effect, a free man
1791-2 First visit to England
