1810 Born 8 June in Zwickau, Germany; the son of a book publisher and writer
1816 Starts piano lessons
1828 Enters Leipzig University to study law and continues music studies
1832 Abandons the law for music, but badly injures his hand playing the piano
1834 Founds music journal, the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik
1840 After bitter opposition from her father, marries Clara Wieck
1844 Teaches composition at Leipzig University, then moves to Dresden, where he meets Wagner
1850 Appointed Music Director to the city of Düsseldorf
1853 Resigns as Music Director. Befriends the young composer Brahms and violinist Joachim
1854 Confined to an asylum after a suicide attempt
1856 Dies 29 July near Bonn
