1833 Born 7 May in Hamburg; the son of an orchestral musician
1847 Gives first public concert as pianist. Begins to make his living by playing in taverns and dance halls.
1853 Concert tour of Germany. Meets violinist Joseph Joachim and Robert and Clara Schumann
1857 Appointed teacher and conductor at German court of Detmold
1868 Settles in Vienna
1872 Becomes conductor of Viennese concert society, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde
1879 Receives honorary doctorate from University of Breslau
1886 Elected member of Berlin Academy of Arts
1897 Dies 3 April in Vienna, from liver cancer.
