1854 Enters Ecole Niedermeyer, a music school in Paris, where he is taught by composer Saint-SaŽns
1865 Becomes a church organist in Rennes, Brittany
1870 Enlists as a soldier in the Franco-Prussian War
1874 Becomes organist at the Madeleine Church in Paris
1877 Accompanies Saint-SaŽns to Germany, to meet Liszt; begins his Requiem Mass
1883 Marries Marie Fremiet
1896 Appointed professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire de Musique
1904 First signs of deafness, an affliction he keeps secret
1905 Becomes director of the Paris Conservatoire
1922 Honoured with the highest class in the French Legion of Honour
1924 Dies 24 November, in Paris
