1838 Born 25 October in Paris. Baptised Alexandre César Léopold, but universally known as Georges
1848 Enters the Paris Conservatoire de Musique at age 9
1857 Wins the Prix de Rome. Premiere of operetta Le Docteur Miracle
1867 Premiere of opera La jolie fille de Perth, which was favourably received by press
1869 Marries Geneviève Halévy, daughter of the composer Jacques Halévy
1870 Joins the National Guard at the time of the Franco-Prussian War
1872 Birth of son Jacques, who committed suicide at age 50 after a failed career
1875 Awarded the Legion of Honour. Controversial premiere of opera Carmen. Dies 3 June, just before Carmen becomes a big success
