1863 Abandons the law for study with Anton Rubinstein at the St. Petersburg Conservatory
1866 Joins Nicholai Rubinstein on the staff of the new Moscow Conservatory
1877 Marriage to a pupil ends nine weeks later and he attempts suicide; patronage of a wealthy widow, Madame Nadezhda von Meck, allows him to abandon teaching and work on composition
1888 European concert tour
1890 End of association with Madame von Meck causes deep depression
1891 Concert tour of U.S.
1893 Dies 6 November from drinking unboiled water during a cholera epidemic
