1862 Born 22 August at St.Germain-en-Laye, France
1872 Enters the Paris Conservatoire de Musique at age 10
1880 Travels to Russia to join the musical circle of Madame von Meck, who was also Tchaikovsky's patron
1884 Wins the Conservatory's highest honour, the Prix de Rome for his cantata L'Enfant prodigue
1894 Completes his first real masterpiece, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
1899 Marries Rosalie Texier, but later leaves her for Emma Bardac
1902 Premiere of his only completed opera, Pelléas et Mélisande
1913 Composes his last major orchestral work, for the ballet Jeux
1918 Dies 25 March from cancer
