1882 Born in Oranienbaum, Russia, 17 June; his father a singer in the St. Petersburg Imperial Opera
1901 Begins studying law
1902 Meets Rimsky-Korsakov, and thereafter devotes most of his time to music studies
1906 Marries Katerina Nossenko
1910 Paris premiere of the ballet The Firebird, commissioned by Diaghilev, brings him fame
1913 Paris premiere of ballet The Rite of Spring
1914 Moves to Switzerland after start of World War I
1920 Settles in France; divides his time between composing, conducting, and performing
1939 Following death of wife and daughter from tuberculosis, leaves France for the U.S.
1940 Marries Vera de Bosset
1945 Becomes a U.S. citizen
1951 Jumpstarts career with The Rake's Progress
1971 Dies 6 April; is buried in Venice, near Diaghilev
