1829 Born 8 May in New Orleans, Louisiana
1840 Debut at the new St. Charles Hotel, as "young X, a Creole"
1842 Left to study piano and composition in Paris; while there he meets Chopin, Offenbach, Berlioz and Meyerbeer, and strikes up a friendship with Georges Bizet and Camille Saint-SaŽns
1853 Returns to America
1857 Travels to the West Indies, stays for three years
1862 Returns to the States, possibly because of the outbreak of the Civil War; supports Union and frees the three slaves he owned
1868 A scandal with a young female student drives him into exile in South America (his name was later cleared)
1869 Dies 18 December, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
