1839 Born 21 March in Kraevo, northern Russia; son of a landowner
1848 Performs a piano concerto by composer John Field
1852 Enters army as an officer cadet, but continues to study music and compose
1857 Begins music lessons from Mily Balakirev, a fellow member of The Five
1858 Resigns army commission
1863 The family fortune is lost, and Mussorgsky has to take a job in the civil service
1865 First recorded attack of withdrawal symptoms from heavy drinking
1874 First full production of opera Boris Godunov
1879 Tours Russia, playing piano for singer Darya Leonova
1880 Resigns from civil service
1881 Suffers fits from alcohol abuse and is committed to a hospital in St. Petersburg, where Ilya Repin paints his portrait. Dies 28 March
