1862 Born 14 July in Baumgarten
1876 Quits school, enrols at Bärgerschule, a local college of art and craft
1883 Forms a partnership with his brother Ernst and another student, Franz Matsch - Klimt-Matsch & Co.
1886 Begins commission of mural decorations for staircases at the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna
1891 He becomes a member of the Co-operative Society of Austrian Artists
1893 Klimt and Matsch are commissioned to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall of the new University of Vienna
1897 Co-founder and the first president the Austrian Art Nouveau group called the Vienna Secession
1900 First painting for the University of Vienna, Philosophy is exhibited unfinished at the Paris World Fair and wins the Grand Prix
1904 Is commissioned to paint the series of mosaic murals (1905-1909) for the Palais Stoclet
1905 Withdraws from the Vienna Secession and forms a new association called "Kunstschau"
1918 Dies 6 February from pneumonia
~1878 Applies for and gains a place at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Arts and Crafts school), one of two Viennese public art schools
