1827 Born 2 April in Cheapside
1839 Becomes an office clerk
1843 Begins applying for a place at the Royal Academy school
1844 Wins place at R.A.
1846 Exhibits picture Little Nell and her Grandfather at the British Institution, and Hark at the Royal Academy
1848 Forms the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with Rossetti and Millais
1849 Travels to France and Belgium with Rossetti
1854 Leaves England to join Thomas Seddon in Egypt, does not return from the Holy Land until 1856
1856 Refuses associateship of the Royal Academy
1858 Helps to form Hogarth Club
1865 Marries Fanny Waugh
1866 Fanny and William leave England for a trip to the East in August
1866 Son was born 26 October; Fanny contracts miliary fever and dies on 20 December
1867 Returns to England
1868 Travels back to Florence in June to work on a memorial to Fanny
1869 Finally reaches Jerusalem on 31 August
1872 Returns to England in July
1875 Marries Edith Waugh (his sister-in-law) in November; they travel to Jerusalem
