1844 Born 21 May in Laval, France
1860 Graduates from the local lycée
1863 Working for a local lawyer, joins the army
1868 Father dies
1869 Enters the Paris municipal toll-collecting service as a second-class clerk
1885 Sends two paintings to the Salon des Champs-Elysées
1886 Exhibits annually at the Salon des Indépendants until his death
1893 Retires from the toll service on a small pension and began to paint full-time
1899 Publishes a play La Vengeance d’une Orpheline Russe
1904 Rousseau publishes a waltz, Clémence
1908 Picasso gives a banquet (half serious half burlesque) in Henri's honour
1910 Dies 4 September in Paris
