1573 Born Michelangelo Merisi on 28 September in the village of Caravaggio
1586 Sent to the studio of painter Peterzano
1589 Apprenticed to Simone Peterzano in Milan (this is questionable)
1592 Arrives in Rome and is employed by Giuseppe Caesare, also known as Cavaliere d'Arpino
1600 Commissioned to decorate the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome
1600 First mention in police records: the rest of his life is marked by accusations of assault, libel, murder
1601 Commissioned by Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome for a Conversion of Saint Paul and Crucifixion of Saint Peter
1606 Kills Ranuccio Tomassoni da Terni during a tennis match, flees to Naples
1607 Travels to Malta, and is made a knight, or cavaliere, of the Maltese order
1608 Arrested again, escapes from a Maltese jail, goes to Syracuse in Sicily
1610 Dies 18 July on the beach at Port'Ercole in Tuscany
