1727 Born at Sudbury in Suffolk 14 May
1740 Apprenticed under a French silver engraver, Hubert Gravelot
1746 Marries Margaret Burr
1759 Relocates to Bath
1761 Exhibits at the first Society of Artist's exhibition in London
1768 Original member of the Royal Academy
1769 Exhibits in the first Royal Academy exhibition
1773 Quarrels with the Royal Academy over the hanging of his pictures - he does not contribute to the Academy again until 1777
1774 Moves to London
1783 Travels in Antwerp
1784 Quarrells again over the hanging of his paintings at the Royal Academy and withdraws his pictures from the exhibition - begins to have annual exhibitions of his work in his own studio
1788 Dies 2 August of cancer
