Traditionally labelled an annunciation altarpiece, the St. Joseph panel is unusual, but more challenging is the difference in weather in the two outer panels. While the left panel depicts a spring setting, the left panel shows snow through the open window. If both are true, perhaps the altarpiece reflects the months from March through December, and is really a nativity.
