St Peter Healing the Sick with his Shadow

1427: Cappella Brancacci, Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence

In this scene, St Peter walks along a street in a medieval town, his shadow healing the infirm as he passes. Various identities have been suggested for the figures with Saint Peter: Masolino, Donatello, Masacccio's brother Giovanni. The single one-point linear perspective makes this one of the earlierst scenes in European art where convincingly portrayed human beings are walking through a convincingly portrayed city street.
