The Conversation

1909: The Hermitage, St. Petersburg

An unusual painting in Matisse's oeuvre, this canvas shows the artist and his wife in a domestic confrontation. Matisse stands stiffly in blue-and-white striped pyjamas while Madame Matisse sits facing him in a black robe. Between them, the window opens up to a scene of grass, flowerbeds, and a tree.
