The Joy of Life

1906: Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA

Matisse achieved a stylistic breakthrough in this brilliantly coloured painting showing an earthly paradise peopled with nudes absorbed in love, dance, music, and nature. This painting was originally purchased by Matisse's patrons Gertrude and Leo Stein, who displayed it in their Paris apartment.
