Las Meninas

Buy now from Art.com1656: Museo del Prado, Madrid

Considered Velázquez's greatest work, Las Meninas interpreted the past and anticipated the future. The device of showing actual figures in lifelike rooms traces back to van Eyck, as does the device of the mirror reflecting an otherwise unseen presence. The theme of the artist portraying himself at work and showing the space in which his work takes place reflects the autobiographical interests of the seventeenth century.
