Home from the Sea

1856-57: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

A young sailor has come home from sea and lies weeping on the grave of his mother, who has died during his absence. Scenes of berevement and mourning were commonplace in Victorian art and literature. This particular scene is set in the graveyard of Old Chingford Church, north of London.
