During the last days of his life, van Gogh painted a series of landscapes about which he wrote "They are vast stretches of corn under troubled skies, and I did not need to go out of my way to try to express sadness and the extreme of loneliness". Sadly, van Gogh shot himself after finishing this painting and died two days later.
