Work on Julius II's tomb turned into decades of on-again, off-again frustration for Michelangelo, as it was progressively downscaled to a comparatively modest wall tomb in San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome. Even so, Michelangelo's brilliant interpretation of the funerary tradition can be seen in a number of beautifully designed and executed tombs in the Medici Chapel for Giuliano and Lorenzo, and for the Duke of Urbino in the New Sacristy, San Lorenzo, Florence.
