1910: The Hermitage at St. Petersburg

Commissioned by Sergei Shchukin, the theme of music in this panel is illustrated by five figures that move across the space like notes on a staff. A standing violinist, naked but androgynous, is accompanied by a panpipe player and three singers. Shchukin required Matisse to tone down the nudity of the male figures with strategic brushwork before he would accept and hang the panels.
