1834 Born 19 July in Paris
1845 Enters Louis-le-Grand, secondary school
1847 Mother dies
1853 Leaves Louis-le-Grand, granted permission to copy at the Louvre
1853 Registers for law school at father's request - spends all his time copying, never reapplies for classes
1854 Studies under Louis Lamothe
1855 Admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts
1856 Travels to Italy in July, spends time in Naples then moves on to Rome, followed by Florence
1859 Returns to Paris in March
1863 Meets Manet, the beginning of a long and stormy relationship
1865 Begins exhibiting at the Salon
1870 Enlists in the National Guard on the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War
1870 Writes open letter to the Salon expressing unfavourable opinion of selection and display practices. Never exhibits at the Salon again
