1874 Born 13 September, in Vienna
1890 Becomes a bank clerk to support widowed mother; studies music in the evenings
1901 Marries Mathilde, the sister of his friend the composer Alexandre von Zemlinsky
1903 Becomes composition teacher at Stern Conservatory in Berlin
1912 Revolutionary song-cycle Pierrot lunaire creates uproar
1915 Joins the Austrian army during World War I; discharged a year later for being sickly
1918 Founds Society for Private Musical Performances, to help protect avant-garde composers from ridicule
1924 On the death of his first wife, marries Gertrud Kolisch
1925 Appointed professor at the Berlin Academy of Arts
1933 Nazi regime forces him, a Jew, to leave Germany. Settles in U.S.
1951 Dies 13 July, in Los Angeles
