1891 Born 23 April, at Sontsovka, in the Ukraine
1900 Composes his first opera, The Giant, at age 9
1904 Enters St. Petersburg Conservatory, studies under Rimsky-Korsakov
1914 Visits London and is commissioned by Diaghilev to write a ballet score
1917 Composes his Classical Symphony in the year of the Russian Revolution
1918 Leaves Russia for U.S.
1923 Marries Lina Llubera and moves to Paris
1936 Returns to the U.S.S.R., now ruled by Stalin
1941 Begins work on epic opera War and Peace in the year Germany invades U.S.S.R.
1948 Charged by the state, with Shostakovich, for the crime of musical "formalism" (being too intellectual and advanced)
1953 Dies 5 March, the same day as Stalin
